bb: tell us a little something about yourself and your background
Scott Allen: I currently reside in Los Angeles and I’ve been deejaying since 1994. I fell in love with the music during my first year of college, my roommates used to play hardcore breakbeats, and mixes from various deejays. It didn’t take long for me to get hooked on the addictive beats. We started going out to clubs and watched many deejays perform and we eventually decided to buy some turntables. My Deejay partner, Tim Andren, and I began playing shows around the U.S. and Canada spinning breakbeats and house music under the name Neosoul. I always looked forward to watching the Good Looking crew perform whenever they came over here to the States. I really enjoyed the vibe of the music and the energy that the emcee brought to the crowd. They had a big part in inspiring me to make a change to focusing my efforts on Drum & Bass. In 2005, I made a complete shift to collecting, deejaying, and producing Drum & Bass music.
Deeper Connection: I currently reside in the U.K., and I have been deejaying since about ’94. I started getting into the music at the age of 13. I remember listnening to the radio, and john peels show was on regularly. His show was similar to Radio One in that, it was one of the few shows breaking new music to the massses. I was also listening and vibing off all the mixtapes that were around, from Ratty & Tango, Mickey Finn, and Jackfrost etc. I was hooked on the music, and started going out to clubs to watch deejays perform.. In about ’97, I settled into listening to jazzy amto dnb. And as time went on, and things evolved, the liquid and deeper stuff began to catch my interest. After appreciating all the music for years, and seeing things evolve, I started producing my own music in 2004. I had a couple of kids and settled down for a bit. I like to refer to some of my tunes from the past that i’ve produced, and the times I experienced at raves. I often like to capture, or recreate that vibe in some way and include it in my current productions. So after all of these experiences, Scott Allen and I formed Soul Deep Recordings in late 2010.
bb: is there any particular reason why you set up a label / where did the idea come from?
The label was an idea that my label partner, Deeper Connection, and I came up with as we were having a conversation about music. We both agreed that we loved the music so much that we wanted to get involved with it at a deeper level. We also agreed that we wanted to provide a strong product that people could count on for great music. Since we are both deejays and producers, we are approaching the label with the idea that we’d like to help elevate our artists productions as well as their deejay careers, and we will do our best to expose their music out to as many people as possible.
bb: is there any kind of general ethos behind your imprint and what kind of the sound are we to expect from it?
Deeper Connection and I both appreciate the deeper side of Drum & Bass. Whether it’s jazzy, minimal, atmospheric, funky, or rolling, we like the deep stuff. You can expect to hear a steady dose of solid releases From the label.
bb: can you name some artists or the first couple of releases forthcoming on soul deep recordings?
Within the first few releases, you can expect to see music by Phat Playaz, DJ Blade, and Projack. In the future we will feature releases by Jaybee, mSdos, Duoscience, Subsid & L-Side, and MJT, just to name a few.
bb: any thoughts on the state of drum and bass?
I love where Drum & Bass is at the moment, there are so many different ways producers can go when making a tune, from dark and aggressive to minimal and atmospheric. Producers can write the music they are feeling at the moment and truly express themselves. And I love that Drum & Bass has such a strong on-line presence. I’ve been able to meet some great people and chat about the music.
bb: will there be vinyl?
Right now we will focus on digital releases, but we might venture into vinyl releases in the future.
